Hi, I'm just logging in to say that I'm alive. New Orleans was hauntingly beautiful and I'm completely in love. But a weird need to be on the road again hit me after a few days and I decided to drive the 550 miles to St Louis in a day. (Yes, I admit it, I went to St Louis to see all the places described in Laurell K. Hamiltons books...I know, I'm still a fan, nomatter how much oogie sex she puts in those books, I still love Anita.)

St Louis was cool, though the places sounded more interesting in hte books than in real life. Just like in New Orleans, I walked around the town without bumping into any vampires, but I heard that N.O. has a rather large population of people who'd love to think that they were vampires. you know, crazies who have been known to kill tourists and drink their blood (serious, I have some great chilling not-quite-ghost-stories to tell you guys when I get home!).

I'm going to go drive through Kansas now. Some will say Dorothy, but I say Winchester brothers! So there!

Bags are packed, sofa is de-bedified, map has been consulted. This means that as soon as [livejournal.com profile] sandchigger is back and tells me how to work that damned washer, I'll be off to New Orleans! Have the address of three hostels, know how to get there, is very excited. All in all I think this will be a success.

These last few days in Fort Worth have been relaxing and fun. Thank you so much for letting me use your living room as a bedroom chigger! You are excellent! And say hi to Cassandra for me! (she's still sleeping)

So, I'm now in Fort Worth texas, living on [livejournal.com profile] sandchigger couch. He has seven cats, and his girlfriend has two dogs, and they're all currently sharing the living room with me. Intense, but fun.

Today I've been to a real American mall, bought a pair of shoes (I know I can't really afford it, but what the heck) and eaten a caramelized apple. Good old-fashioned American things! Tomorrow I will do the tourist thing and check out downtown Fort Worth. It will be awesome!

So, I think it's finally laid out, my new plans for travel. I'm sure you're all wondering why I'm still in Roswell, I mean, it's not like the town has that many alien museums, you can mostly finish of the tourist thing in about a day. But, the motel I'm staying at has a few really nice people staying here. They're long term residents who live in the rooms next to mine, and they mostly spend their days going to the construction site and working and then coming back here to sit on the porch grilling meat and drinking burbon. And I got invited to hang out with them. So that's what I've been doing. Slacking, drinking and eating meat while talking to nice people. You'd be surprised how fast the time flies when you're doing nothing with nice people.

The cast of this little motel:

James - texan, complete with accent and with a hidden love for books.

Justin - the young georgian with the fioncee who's moving down here.

Ron - the 51 year old man from Kansas with a heart condition and a gun collection

Cody - the eminem wannabe with an 8 months pregnant girlfriend he got together with 3 weeks ago.

And me!

After comicon, my big adventure of driving around from place to place without actually knowing anyone finally began. Know what I've found out? I like having people around me...I sorta miss having someone to talk to. But hey, I'm surviving. And having fun.

adventure begins! )

But my question to you is: were do I go from here? My original plan was to visit Sandchigger in texas, but now it seems that he might be too busy with work to actually have time to see me. I think it's poll time!

Since I'm sure many people have already dazzeled you all with their detailed, yet clever reports from comicon, I will not bother to write down everything. Suffice to say, the hostel was really nice (hostel cat, go there if you're in the San Diego area), the panels were both fun and interesting and I got in on a press pass, meaning I got the conferance for free and could run up in front of the stage and take pictures without feeling bad.

I will however, give you the best quotes from the conferance and a few pictures.

(oh, and I just have to say this: Yes, I saw Jensen Ackles, yes he was about 3 feet from me, no I didn't get to talk to him, but I got to talk to Eric Kripke, and though he spent the entire time he wasn't talking posing for the pictures he knew people were taking, he was both funny and halfway intelligent when he spoke. I love that man!)

quotes and pics )

Oh, yeah, and I met [livejournal.com profile] chesire_monkey and [livejournal.com profile] abigor_60 again, and we hung out practically throughout the entire conferance. Which pretty much doubled the fun. thanks guys!

And I met a whole bunch of other lj-ers. It was nice to finally meet you [livejournal.com profile] brianrubin. thank you for helping me to the front of the line for Supernatural. and here I thought it would have been enough to just show up at 7.30 for a panel that started at 2.45. You knew better, and I am grateful! And you [livejournal.com profile] limminel even though we only talked for about 5 minutes. :)

I will now add all the other people I met who I've yet to friend. Excellent conferance! :)

So, yesterday I first went jogging (in the summer heat of California. Be impressed with me, I am) and then did some yoga (I am like the healthiest tourist ever *very proud*). Then, I bullied [livejournal.com profile] chesire_monkey into agreeing to have dinner with me just so I'd have an excuse to drive up to Sacramento (and to meet her, of course). And it was awesome! I just expected her to take a little bit of time off from work to hang out with me, but she took the entire evening off and we went out to a Mexican restaurant (ernesto's?), then she and her boyfriend/husband/lover??? took me to oldtown Sacramento which was this awesome old western-style part of the city with fortune tellers, candy stores and, for some strange reason, tattoo parlors. The evening ended at their place where I finally got to see the movie Pleasantville. All in all, a mighty fine trip.

This morning, [livejournal.com profile] chesire_monkey and I went out for breakfast and I got to try out the American speciality "pigs in a blanket", which turned out to be sausages wrapped in pancakes with butter and syrup. And it was yummy. And tonight I'm doing even more roleplaying with John and Liz. Too bad I forgot to bring my camera to Sacramento, or else you'd have gotten to see loads of pictures (especially since I got stuck in traffic on the way up there and thus had lots of time to admire the scenery.)

So, I'll be leaving San Francisco tomorrow. I've wandered around it extremely much, taken an impressive amount of picutres of both the city and redwood, and done lots of cool stuff. I've been at Pier 39, at Coit tower, taken the cable cars, been to chinatown and walked through the entire financial district, North beach and the Castro (of course).

And now, I've leased a car from [livejournal.com profile] badgerbag's friend Lee. Which is awesome! So I'm now going to actually be able to drive around in the US! *so pleased* It's a Honda, and pretty, and silver, and it's an automatic (which I will hopefully learn to use) and very comfortable. I will show you pictures. I've already managed to get lost on the highway once in it, but I'll buy myself a map tomorrow before going off on my great driving adventure! This is going to be so great.

This icon is called: Hello Boys
American cinemas, I found, are much like Norwegian ones. the only difference is that American cinemas haven't got reserved seats so when John and I went to see HP 5, we entered the cinema a full half hour before the movie started. This gave us time to see quite a bit of commercials, but on the other hand we got excellent seats.

( Jul. 13th, 2007 12:32 am)
I'm in the US, and already it has become evident that trying to travel around here is nearly impossible without a car. I mean, I have a few options, and I can definitely get around, but when I started adding up the different costs to go places that are outside big cities, it starts to add up at an alarming rate. Take Yosemite (a national park in California) for instance. I'd have to take the train to Merced (34 dollars), then take a bus to the park (25 dollars) then pay the entrance fee (apporximately 20dollars). That's 79 dollars. For one trip.

There are of course different options, and I'd like your opinion on them:

1. Rent a car: this will cost me 1600 dollars for my entire stay. The problem with a car though is that I would be driving everywhere, and thus not be able to enjoy the sites we drive by. Then again, it is the classic way of travelling across America, and I would not be burdened by bus routes. Also, no trouble with getting my luggage on and off buses.

2. Buy a used car. I've looked around, and it's possible to get a decent used car for about 7-900 dollars. The same pros and cons as point number one, but also there's the added risk of it breaking down on the way, plus the unknown price of a short term car insurance. On the other hand I've never actually owned a car before and when I think about it, my tummy tingles. So I really really want to buy a used car and drive around the US. In addition to this, I should be able to sell it before I leave and get a little bit of money back again.

3. Buy a 60 day Discovery pass on the Greyhound. this costs 645 dollars, and it has 3100 stops in the US. So I would be able to go practically anywhere, and relax on my way there. On the other hand, they might not go exactly where I want them to, so I'd have to add in the mystery amount of money it will cost me to get to the places where the Greyhound doesn't go. Also, I get queasy on buses so the added pleasure of being able to relax and enjoy the scenery might not appeal to me that much. But it's definitely an option.

4. Buying a 60 day ticket on the Amtrax train. 1000dollars. Though more enjoyable than riding a bus, the train costs more and goes less places. So I ruled this one out.

What do you think people? I need help! I need opinions! What would you do?

So, I got into the US okay. Lost my flight, but got a later one the same day so here I am, in John Kim's living room, just having finished watching justice league with his kid and eating mac 'n cheese. Very American. I'm so pleased!

Kinda tired, haven't had time to realize that I'm actually on the other side of the world from everyone just yet, and a little hyped on caffeine. This is going to be awesome!

Signing off!

Roskilde was fun, though muddy. To be quite honest, I'm not much of a festival person, I find the idea of being muddy for a week quite disgusting, and I've never been much of a camper. So spending a week in a wet tent, walking around drunk in muddy boots, with muddy pants, and muddy hands, and muddy jackets sound to me to be a lot like hell. Turns out, it was. But then again, if I get to spend my time in hell with awesome people like [livejournal.com profile] aj_stalin, Hanne, Margrethe and Annett, then I won't be complaining too much down there either.

All in all, the music was fun, the alcohol was fun, the people were great and the logistics, the camping experience and the mud was pure hell. So though I probably won't be going back to Roskilde ever, it was nice to be able to say that I survived the muddiest, wettest, most horrid Roskilde that's been so far. That's right people, between 4 - 5000 people went home, but I stayed even though everything I owned was wet and muddy, my tent got flooded and I got sick.

Bands I saw:

+the Killers (awesome)
+Bjork (also awesome, even though I didn't find any of the people I was supposed to watch it with)
+Mastodon(though I was too wet to enjoy them)
+My Chemical Romance (a little of them at least)
+Machine Head (a little of those too)
+Arctic Monkeys (awesome)
+Beastie Boys (totally awesome, though I lost everyone I knew and was stuck with the beers I bought for them)
+Maher Shalal Haz Bash Some weird japanese guy who played 120 songs in an hour (totally awesome, but probably wouldn't have been if I wasn't drunk from all the beer I had to drink because I lost the people I knew at the start of the Beastie Boys concert)
+BigBang (awesome)
+Clipse (allright)
+Timbuktu & Damn (best concert ever!)

Bags are packed, room is cleaned, and I'm just about to pack down my computer to take it across the ocean to that great unknown land of the US of A (or, first off to Denmark, but hey, that's a trifling detail). That is, if I didn't have to stay in and clean the apartment before Eivind moves in. Grumble. Someone (eyeballing [livejournal.com profile] sortkatt and [livejournal.com profile] 45hasle) decided that yesterday was a great day to try to make ginger candy and not clean it up. The stuff is all over the kitchen! Oh well, I'm satisfying my hung over and very tired self with the fact that when I've cleaned the kitchen now, I won't have to do it again for at least another 2 months.

I like reading newspapers. I try to read all the big Norwegian newspapers in fact (except Dagbladet and VG, but that’s just because they focus on news like “how to stay slim throughout the bikini season), and I do that because I know that different papers have different takes on each case. I expect that “Financial News” (Dagens Næringsliv) will take a very different stance than “the Class Struggle” (Klassekampen) for example. And usually, that’s exactly why I read both papers.

But, sometimes, their viewpoints astound me. I’m astounded when the Class Struggle prints an article that bases itself solely on mocking a political party, especially when it mocks the Socialist Left Party (Sosialistisk Venstreparti) for going against a law that is not a clear-cut good idea (an age limit of 24 years for marrying and bringing home someone who’s not from Norway). I can respect that they disagree with me, for instance, on the law, but to say that the only thing the Socialist Left Party has ever accomplished is to deny people the right to own Pitbulls (!) is a lie, and a stupid one at that. But I’m equally astounded when Financial News, a paper one expects to speak out against government control, print an article that makes it sound like the Norwegian government, for no reason at all, wants to spend 4 billion kroner on buying up stock in the Norwegian oil company (the new Statoil/Hydro). I can understand that they disagree with the wish for government control, and I can understand that they disagree with the, problematic to say the least, use of the oil fund to pay for it, but what I cannot understand is that they don’t think for a second that there’s a reason the government wants to keep their 67% ownership of the state’s oil company. I mean come on, it’s not completely out of the blue, and to try to angle the article away from “can we really spend our oil money on this” to “the stupid government wants, for no reason at all, to buy back stock in their company” is just silly. I am annoyed with both papers and the world in general.

I’m quitting my job in four days. I’m a little sad actually. Though it hasn’t been the kind of job I dream of, the people have been extremely nice and it’s been challenging. Of course, my conclusion is that I never ever want to end up as a secretary, but as a temporary thing it could have been a lot worse. I’ll miss all the people I worked with, and I’ll miss the regular hours and decent pay.

But though I may be a little wistful, I’m also excited to embark on the longest trip I’ve ever been on, and my first trip alone. It will be exciting and adventurous, and hopefully legendary. I have this small horrible feeling in my tummy though, that everybody will forget me while I’m gone and that when I get home, everybody will have made new close ties to other people and I’ll be all alone. Also, I’m scared that I might miss everybody so terribly that the trip won’t be as fun as I want it to be. Basically, I wish I wasn’t going until mid-July so I had a little more time to get mentally ready to leave all the people I love.

I’ll miss you guys! You have to write me, and still love me when I get back!

So, I had an awesome weekend. On Friday, I went to a meeting after work, and then watched obscene amounts of HIMYM with [Bad username or site: ”akselwestlund” @ livejournal.com] and [Bad username or site: ”mirazandar” @ livejournal.com] Then, on Saturday, my combined going away party and birthday party was a blast! Due to [Bad username or site: ”aj_stalin” @ livejournal.com]s unfortunate incident with a midget, we had to do it in my small apartment, and it was packed, but hey, who needs more than 1m3 anyways? Everyone got inside the door, and we mingled and talked, and listened to great music, and drank obscene amounts of alcohol and were generally awesome. I haven’t felt as sexy in a good long while and I got lots of pressies! Plus, people I haven’t met for a year showed up! Oh, it was so great!

Sunday was spent basically cleaning the apartment (or, at least taking out the trash and empty bottles), and watching Weeds and Memento. Memento, kinda obvious, but good movie. Weeds I’ve seen before but it’s still nice. I gave into my craving and ordered a pizza from Spice. It was good, and it came with a pizza roller so now we don’t have to cut our own pizzas with knives anymore, but it just isn’t the same as the Peppe’s Pizzas I’m sad to admit. Anyways it was nummy, and I didn’t eat it all, so I still feel like a good person.

There is NOTHING that can't be made cooler with the word "zombie" in front of it.

In order to test this theory, it is vitally important that you, the WPWHQ readership, do the following.

1) Count back 10 entries in your journal.

2) Take the 5th sentence

3) Insert the word "zombie" into the sentence

4) Post it as a comment here.

5) OPTIONAL: Repost this meme in your own journal

My result was: Instead, I have to, while they wait outside for me to come get them, enter the zombies they’re visiting’s calendars and find the meeting room they’ve reserved (if they’ve bothered to reserve one at all).

I like that the Warhammer rpg characters we've made have grown really jaded. Yesterday, when we'd solved the crime and gotten all the bad guys locked up we, instead of trying to leave or finishing our business (because we had to wait till morning if we wanted our payment), decided to get a good night's sleep, just because we knew that probably, come morning, all hell would break loose. And, sure enough, we got woken up by screaming and the entire town we were visiting was infected with chaos. But we were prepared and rested, and thus slayed peasants and hell beasts like there was no tomorrow. Then, we got out with our wagons and a profit. Awesome.

Best scene of the game:

Regina: "Ah, what a jerk. Why do I have to flirt with the guards? Now I had to promise him a date tomorrow."
Waldemar (me, her secret lover): "A date?! I thought you two looked chummy!" *angry*
Regina: "But you were the one who suggested I go talk to him!"
Waldemar: "I wanted you to talk to him yeah, but you didn't have to do it so well!"
