This weekend rocked. On Friday I ended up at one of my colleagues’ house watching chick-flicks and talking about guys. I love that girl…

Then, on Saturday me, Marthe and June went to the movies and saw Music and Lyrics before we went out and got cocktails. Awesome!

And on Sunday, I watched the end of Supernatural ses 2. Is still reeling from the experience…do not have words. Was so awesome! Sigh…I cried, I yelled at the screen, I cant’ wait till season 3. So, does anyone know when it’s due?

On a different note, I need to see some films: "Grindhouse", "Death proof", "Captivity" and "Hostell". These are movies in a new genre called "Torture porn", apparently, and are supposed to be demeaning to women. The woman who wrote about them, Wenke Mülheisen, also mention Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez as iconic figures in this genre and, as they are two of my favourite film makers, I'd like to prove her wrong. To do so, however, I need to watch these films and discuss them from a feminist perspective. So anyone who likes me, feminism and/or ultra-violence, please come see them with me? I promise to supply the movies and cheese doodles...

I don't know what the hell your movie reviewer was talking about including Grindhouse (which is what the two movies Death Proof and Planet Terror were billed as when released as a double feature here in the states) as either Torture Porn -OR- demeaning to women. Death Proof includes an entire cast of heroines who band together to beat the ever loving fuck out of the bad guy.

I didn't particularly care for Hostel or Captivity, though, as the plots were pretty thin and it did seem to be nothing more than an attempt to show all kinds of horrible mutilations. Oh, and tits. Tits 'n gore. Like an 80s slasher flick, but without the humor.

She's not a movie reviewer, she's a feminist professor. Maybe tits 'n gore is what she meant by "torture porn"? Just trying to keep an open mind to her article, which was brilliant by the way, even though I'm not necessarily buying the movie part of it.

Then again, I'm not good at reading feminism into things. I've been reading a book that was deemed the feminist literature high-point of last year and to me it doesn't seeem feminist at all, but rather like a boring book about different women who do nothing to improve on there okay if not brilliant life situations. I've been fighting my way through it, and am only 30 pages away from putting it back on the shelf forever. But I don't like it when I feel like I'm missing part of something, like I'm supposed to get something I don't, you know? Makes me feel unintelligent and all that...

I'm just arguing that including Death Proof/Grindhouse in with the others as Torture Porn is ridiculous. The rest are definitely Torture Porn (you might include the Australian film Wolf Creek in this category as well). But hell, the women I know who've seen Grindhouse felt that the female leads were pretty empowering.

You're probably right...we will watch them and try to see it they are in fact interesting from a feminist perspective.

But I'm not sure if I want to watch Hostile. It seems so oogie.

It's Hostel as in "place for travelers to stay for cheap" and yes it's pretty nasty.

Ah, sorry, the lady in the paper spelled it wrong...then I got confused if it was the same movie and what it was called and so forth and so on.

Yup, I've read the plot of the movie and is now sure that it is not demeaning to women as much as it is demeaning to humans in general. I feel good about not watching it.
