So, I let one of my customers try on the hand-cuffs without the safety locks today. He wanted to know if it was possible to get out of them if you had the keys yourself, and I, having contemplated this on many a lonely Sunday without the opportunity to find out, naturally said yes. The answer to the question was, no, making me happy that I did not try it on myself without anyone present last Sunday at work. But here comes the problem: Not only was he not able to get them off, neither was I. During my ten minutes of fiddling before I got them off, I had plenty of time to imagine who to call, security or the police, to tell them: "no no, this is work-related, really. He just really wanted to try on these hand-cuffs." Though my customer was pleased that he could not get them off himself, he figured that it was a little too scary, probably also contemplating the horrors of being hand-cuffed whilst the police falls over laughing, and went with the regular cuffs, with the safety locks. Less fun, but less dangerous.
I think I learned a valuable lesson from this, though I'm not sure what it was yet. Don't let your customers try on constraints in the store because it could cause immense embarassment? Don't buy hand-cuffs without safety locks if you do not consider the possibility of having to call a lock smith sexy? No matter how used you are to your job you can still blush?
I have yet to find out the important question though: Do you call the police or security? And what on earth do you tell them?
