well, here we go (and see, [livejournal.com profile] sandchigger how tagging me in the middle of my exams is a bad thing? At least for the contents of my replies...)

Maxine Berg and Pat Hudson have argued that most accounts of innovation in the industrial revolution in effect focus on process change, on innovation in capital goods. Berg has stressed the importance of a relatively unexamined part of innovation at that time, namely product innovation in consumer goods, especially in products that can be considered luxury goods. Thus was a key demand-side factor shaping innovation in Britain, and gave rise to major industries. Some of the evidence for this will be outlined below.
